Ships tie up early and often leave by mid-afternoon, so Ketchikan is a half-day town unless you book something that leaves the downtown strip. Creek Street is the postcard — a boardwalk of houses on pilings that was the red-light district until 1954 — and you can walk it in twenty minutes. The rain is real: about 3.8 m a year; bring a jacket, not a ceremonial umbrella.

Creek StreetNational Historic Landmark district · free to walk
Salmon seasonLate July onward — watch from the boardwalk railing
Ward Cove berth~11 km north · shuttle time ~25 min each way
Totem BightState park north of town · carved poles in rainforest

Pick your clock: 4, 6 or 8 hours

All-aboard is the real constraint — not the brochure. Independent tours do not hold the ship. Prices on Viator and GetYourGuide move with the season; open the live inventory the week you sail.

4 hours

Downtown loop — Creek Street and the hatchery hill

For: Ward Cove guests with shuttle tax, families, rainy days.

  1. If you docked at Ward Cove, budget the shuttle both ways before anything else.
  2. Creek Street boardwalk → Married Man's Trail uphill → back via the creek viewpoint.
  3. Totem Heritage Center or the waterfront shops only if time remains — do not start a floatplane day in a 4-hour window.

Skip: Lumberjack show + long coach tour stacked together — you will watch the clock, not the axes.

6 hours

Totems + town — the balanced port day

For: Anyone who wants culture without giving up the afternoon entirely.

  1. Morning coach or taxi to Totem Bight State Historical Park ( poles in second-growth forest, not a gift-shop row).
  2. Return via downtown for Creek Street and a dry café while the next shower passes.
  3. Optional: short harbour tour if the weather window is clean and all-aboard is after 15:00.

Skip: Booking Misty Fjords floatplanes without a weather backup plan — fog cancels; keep a downtown Plan B.

8 hours

Misty Fjords window — only if the ship sits long enough

For: Early arrival + late departure, or expedition-length calls.

  1. Floatplane or boat into Misty Fjords National Monument — the big scenic day from this port.
  2. Confirm cancellation policy and a same-day refund path; then keep Creek Street as the soft landing if weather kills the flight.
  3. Be on the pier a full hour before all-aboard; independent flights do not hold cruise ships.

Skip: Stacking Misty + Totem Bight + a show — pick the fjords or the town depth, not both at a sprint.

DIY notes

Downtown is genuinely free and good. Totem Bight needs a bus, taxi or tour. Norwegian and some others use Ward Cove — the shuttle is paid and constant; treat those 50 minutes round-trip as part of every itinerary or you will miss the ship for a coffee.
