💡 Money-Saving Strategy
Eat your main meal before going to the Fan Festival or to a pub — inside event venues and tourist-heavy pubs, prices are 30–50% higher. The spots below are where locals eat. Aim for Commercial Drive (near Fan Festival) and Main Street (near BC Place) for the best value.
Near FIFA Fan Festival (Hastings Park)
La Taqueria Pinche Taco Shop · lataqueria.com
Widely regarded as the best tacos in Vancouver. Authentic Mexican street food, small but perfect. The al pastor and carnitas tacos are legendary. Line up at 11 AM on match days to avoid the queue. Cheap, fast and genuinely delicious.
Havana Restaurant · havanarestaurant.ca
Cuban-Latin restaurant on Commercial Drive with an amazing brunch and a lively patio. The breakfast burrito (~$14 (est.)) and plantain dishes are incredible value. Full bar, great cocktails. The Drive's most beloved spot — go for the atmosphere as much as the food.
Calabash Bistro · calabashbistro.ca
Caribbean and West African cuisine — jerk chicken, oxtail stew, roti and ackee. Perfect food diversity for a World Cup where Caribbean and African nations are celebrated. Portions are generous and prices are very reasonable for what you get.
The Reef Caribbean Restaurant · thereefrestaurant.com
The best jerk chicken in Vancouver — hands down. The Reef has been serving authentic Caribbean food for 20 years. Rice and peas, festival dumplings, ackee and saltfish. Incredibly affordable dinner. Go early or expect a wait.
Doppio Zero Pizza · doppiozeropizza.ca
Neapolitan pizza done right — wood-fired, thin crust, imported Italian ingredients. The margherita (~$18 (est.)) and prosciutto (~$22 (est.)) pizzas are better than anything you'd find in Italy for double the price. Split a pizza and save.
Phnom Penh Restaurant · phnompenh.ca
Legendary Cambodian/Vietnamese restaurant — the butter beef and crispy garlic chicken are famous across North America. Consistently voted one of Vancouver's best restaurants. Lunch mains start at ~$12 (est.). The wait is always worth it.
Earnest Ice Cream · earnesticecream.com
The best ice cream in Vancouver — small-batch, local dairy, unusual seasonal flavours like Salted Caramel Pretzel and Brown Butter Hazelnut. A scoop is ~$5–7 (est.). Perfect between matches or walking Commercial Drive. Kids and adults obsessed equally.
Best Poutine in Vancouver
Fritz European Fry House
Vancouver's poutine institution. The classic poutine (~$12 est.) uses real Quebec cheese curds and a rich gravy that locals have been addicted to for years. Also incredible Belgian-style fries with 20+ sauces. Tiny and casual — perfect match day snack spot.
La Belle Patate
French-Canadian poutine specialists. The classic is perfect but the lobster poutine ($22 (est.)) is a Vancouver experience you need to have once. Huge portions, genuine Quebec cheese curds shipped fresh. Cash only.
Best Food Trucks — Match Day
Japadog
Vancouver's most famous food truck invention — Japanese-style hot dogs with toppings like teriyaki, seaweed and daikon. The Oroshi ($7 (est.)) and Terimayo ($7 (est.)) are must-tries. Look for their truck on game day evenings downtown.
Mom's Grilled Cheese
Exactly what it sounds like, done perfectly. Thick sourdough, aged cheddar and creative additions (fig jam, pulled pork, mushroom). $8–14 (est.) per sandwich. Comfort food for long match days. Follow their Instagram for location updates.
El Furniture Warehouse
Famous for their ~$5.95 food menu (est.) — yes, everything on the menu is under $6 (est.). Chicken strips, salads, nachos, sliders. Basic pub food but incredible value for downtown. Gets very busy but moves fast.
Nuba Lebanese Restaurant
Lebanese food, halal-certified. The hummus, fattoush salad and chicken shawarma plates are outstanding. Large portions for $14–18 (est.). Very popular with the Middle Eastern fan community during World Cup.
The VPD (Virtuous Pie)
100% plant-based pizza restaurant. Incredible flavours using house-made cashew cheese and creative toppings. Even non-vegans rave about it. The Thai One On pizza ($21 (est.)) is outstanding. Great for groups with mixed dietary needs.
