Citizens of 60+ countries (EU, UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and more) need only an Electronic Travel Authorization. Apply online at canada.ca — usually approved within minutes. Valid 5 years. Apply well before travel.
Temporary Resident Visa
~$100 (est.) CAD
Required for citizens of countries without eTA agreement, including India, China, Philippines, many African and Middle Eastern nations. Processing: 2–12 weeks. Apply immediately at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.
US Citizens & PR
No visa needed
US citizens and permanent residents can enter Canada with just a valid US passport (or green card). No eTA required by air. Always have valid photo ID. Border crossing times may increase significantly during World Cup.

Best way to get cash
Bank ATMs
Use TD, RBC, BMO, or Scotiabank ATMs for the best exchange rates. Withdraw in larger amounts (~$200 (est.) CAD) to minimize per-transaction fees ($2–5 (est.) CAD from your home bank). Avoid airport currency exchange booths — rates are 5–10% worse.
Card payments
Visa / Mastercard / Amex
Cards accepted almost everywhere in Vancouver. Tap-to-pay (contactless) is universal — you can tap for any amount. Many places also accept Apple Pay and Google Pay. US Discover cards have limited acceptance.
Foreign transaction fees
~2–3% typical
Most foreign bank cards charge a foreign transaction fee of 2–3% per purchase. Cards like Wise, Revolut, or Charles Schwab (US) have no foreign fees. If you'll spend heavily, getting a no-fee card before travel is worthwhile.
Cash needed for
Tips, markets, small cafés
Carry ~$40–60 CAD cash (est.) for tips, Granville Island Market, small street food stalls, and some Chinatown restaurants (a few are cash-only). Most SkyTrain fare machines accept card and cash.
SIM Cards & Connectivity
Canada has excellent LTE/5G coverage — options for every budget
Best overall: Fido or Lucky Mobile prepaid SIM (~$35–50 (est.) CAD / 10–30 GB)Available at YVR airport arrivals, Walmart, Best Buy, 7-Eleven downtown. Fido uses Rogers network (best Vancouver coverage). Activate with just a passport — no Canadian address needed. Keep your foreign SIM for WhatsApp number.

Healthcare & Safety
Travel insurance is essential — no free healthcare for visitors

Buy travel insurance before departure
Unlike many countries, Canada does NOT provide free emergency healthcare to visitors. A single ER visit can cost ~$1,000–$5,000+ CAD (est.). An ambulance ride: ~$200–600 CAD (est.). Hospital admission: ~$3,000+ (est.) per day. Buy comprehensive travel insurance — medical coverage minimum ~$100,000 CAD (est.) recommended.
Walk-in Clinics (no appointment)
$80–150 CAD per visit (~est.)
For minor issues (cold, minor injury, prescription): walk-in clinics are faster and cheaper than ER. Several near downtown: Medicentres (multiple locations), DoctorNowBC virtual walk-in. Your travel insurance will reimburse — keep receipts.
Pharmacy (Drugstore)
Shoppers Drug Mart
Canada's largest pharmacy chain. 24-hour locations: 1125 Davie St (West End), 855 W Broadway. Stocks most common medications. Pharmacists can give minor treatment advice. Ibuprofen, antihistamines, cold medicine available without prescription.
🔐 Safety in Vancouver
Safe areas (no concerns): Downtown, Gastown, Yaletown, West End, Davie Village, Granville Island, Commercial Drive, Olympic Village, South Granville, Kitsilano, North Vancouver.
Avoid at night: Downtown Eastside (DTES) — the blocks around Hastings Street between Main and Clark. This is a poverty/drug crisis area. Safe to walk through during the day but not a good area to linger.
Petty theft prevention: Don't leave valuables visible in cars. Be aware of backpacks in crowds. Use hotel safe for passport and extra cash. Phone theft is rare but possible in very crowded match-day areas — use a wrist strap for your phone.
Cannabis is legal in Canada: Adults 19+ can legally buy cannabis at licensed stores (BC Cannabis Stores). Smoking is allowed in some outdoor areas, restricted near schools and playgrounds. Completely illegal to bring cannabis across international borders — even into Canada.
Alcohol: Legal drinking age in BC is 19. Beer/wine/spirits at licensed restaurants, pubs, and BC Liquor Stores. Drinking in public (parks, streets) is generally not permitted — exceptions may exist for licensed Fan Festival areas.

Essential packing
The Vancouver essentials
Light jacket or zip fleece for evening matches. One light rain layer (not a full raincoat). Comfortable walking shoes — you'll walk 10,000+ steps on match days. Sunscreen (summer UV is strong). Reusable water bottle (tap water is safe and excellent).
Dress code for BC Place
No restrictions
National team kits welcome. No glass bottles or large bags (check bc-place.com for current bag policy). BC Place is open-roof with a retractable roof — can get cool after sunset. Stadium seating gets cold after 9 PM on cloudless nights.
Tipping Customs
Tipping is expected in Canada — more than most countries
Sit-down restaurants
18–20% is standard
15% is minimum for decent service. 18–20% is the norm. 25% for excellent service. The POS terminal will suggest percentages (often 18%, 20%, 25%) — you can tap "Custom" to enter any amount or decline. Always on the pre-tax total.
Counter service / takeout
0–15% optional
The "tip screen" will appear — totally optional for counter service. 10–15% is appreciated for coffee shops where staff make your drink. Bakeries and fast food: no tip expected. Rounding up is a polite gesture.
Taxis & rideshares
15% is standard
Uber/Lyft: tip in-app after the ride (15–20%). Regular taxis: round up the meter by 15%. No tip for short rides under ~$10 (est.) is acceptable but may result in a grumpy driver. Hotel shuttle: ~$2–3 per person (est.).
Hotels & other services

Housekeeping: ~$3–5 per night (est.) (leave in cash with a "Thank You" note). Bellhop: ~$2–3 per bag (est.). Bar/pub: ~$1–2 per drink (est.). Hair/spa: 15–20%. Hotel concierge for major help: ~$5–20 (est.). Tour guides: 15–20% of tour cost.
No-tip tip: You are NEVER legally required to tip. The terminal always has a "No Tip" option. However, restaurant and bar workers in Canada earn below minimum wage in some provinces and rely on tips. In Vancouver (BC), minimum wage is paid to all staff regardless — tips are bonus income on top of regular pay, not a substitute.
Culture & Etiquette
Vancouver is one of the world's most multicultural cities — very welcoming to all fans
Canadians are genuinely polite — "Sorry" is said constantly, even when it's not the person's fault. Don't be offended: it's cultural reflex. People hold doors, let others off the elevator first, and say thank you to bus drivers.
Queue culture is sacred. Always line up. Never cut a queue. This applies to SkyTrain doors, pubs, restaurants, ATMs — everywhere. Cutting will provoke immediate (politely passive-aggressive) disapproval.
Smoking is banned inside all public buildings, on patios of restaurants, within 6 metres of any building entrance, and near playgrounds. Designated smoking areas exist in some parks. Fines can apply. Cannabis smoking follows the same rules.
Environmentally conscious city. Bring your own bag to shops (~$0.25 (est.) charge for plastic bags est.). Sort recyclables from garbage — bins have clear labels. Don't litter — ~$2,000 fines exist (est.) but are rarely issued; it's more about culture.
Time zone: Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) = UTC−7. In June–July 2026. Match kick-off times announced in Pacific Time. To convert: EST = PDT+3, BST (UK) = PDT+8, CET = PDT+9, GST/Dubai = PDT+11, AEST = PDT+17.
Power outlets: Type A and B (same as USA) — 120V/60Hz. European and UK plugs need an adapter. Most hotel rooms have Type A sockets. USB ports are common in hotels. Bring a universal travel adapter to be safe.
Very inclusive city. Vancouver is one of the world's most LGBTQ+ friendly cities — Davie Village is the main gay neighbourhood. Rainbow flags are common citywide. Same-sex public displays of affection are completely normal and accepted.
Fan behaviour: Canadian fan culture is enthusiastic but generally peaceful. Expect celebrations in the streets after Canada wins — friendly, not dangerous. Police presence on match days is high. Aggressive behaviour toward opposing fans is rare and frowned upon.
