The city itself is a beer-and-neighbourhoods town; the reason you book the ticket is usually the Front Range.
One honest warning from sea level: altitude is not marketing. You will feel day one. Plan a light first afternoon, drink more water than seems reasonable, and save the 14er ambitions for people who live here.
Getting there from Vancouver
Flying YVR–DEN is the default — Air Canada, Air Canada Express and United all fly it nonstop year-round in roughly 2h40, and one-stop itineraries via Seattle or Calgary still fit a long weekend if you avoid the red-eye that lands you useless. US customs preclearance at YVR means you exit DEN as a domestic passenger.
RTD light rail connects the airport to downtown (~37 minutes) — one of the better US airport trains. Skip the USD $70 taxi unless you are three people with ski bags.
What is actually worth your time
Red Rocks Amphitheatre is geology first, concerts second — go in daylight even without a show. Union Station and LoDo work as a walkable base; RiNo (River North) for murals and newer restaurants.
Day trips decide the trip quality: Rocky Mountain National Park (Trail Ridge Road when open — book timed entry in peak season), Boulder for a flatter walkable town day, and ski country (Winter Park, A-Basin) when snow is the point. Summer weekend traffic into the mountains is real — leave early.

Papers, preclearance and the 30-day rule
YVR is one of eight Canadian airports with United States border preclearance, which changes the shape of your departure day. You clear US Customs and Border Protection in Vancouver, before boarding, and arrive at Denver as a domestic passenger — no immigration queue, bags straight off the belt. The trade is at this end: give yourself three hours at YVR for a US departure, not the two you would use for a domestic flight.
Canadian citizens need a passport and no ESTA and no visa for a normal visit. The rule that changed is about length, not paperwork at the gate: since 11 April 2025, anyone staying 30 consecutive days or more must be registered with US immigration. Flying in, you are issued an electronic I-94 automatically and are already registered; driving across a land border, you may not be, and then Form G-325R has to be filed online before day 30. Non-compliance is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of up to USD 5,000. For a long weekend in Denver this is irrelevant; for anyone stretching a ski season, it is not.

Budget in US dollars and treat the exchange rate as the biggest line item you cannot control.
