Houston

Space City sprawl — serious museums, serious food, and a humid energy that is pure Texas

Car verdictYes — Houston is a driving metro

Food truthOne of the best US food cities — chase it
Best monthsNovember–April (summer is heavy heat/humidity)

Houston does not do postcard density. It does scale, museums, NASA, and a food culture that stacks Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, barbecue and fine dining without asking permission. Vancouverites who only know Texas through Austin headlines under-rate Houston — until they eat for three days and forgive the freeways.

Getting there & moving

Fly into IAH (global hub) or HOU (closer to some central neighbourhoods). Rent a car unless you are glued to one walkable pocket and willing to rideshare everywhere — Houston rewards wheels.

What to do without pretending it is Europe

Museum District is the civic core for visitors: MFAH, Menil Collection (free, unforgettable), and green space between. Space Center Houston is the NASA day — go if space is your reason; skip if heat and queues will ruin you.

Neighbourhood food: Montrose, EaDo, Bellaire for Vietnamese, and whatever barbecue queue a local texts you. This city is eaten, not merely seen.

Where to stay

Museum District / Montrose for culture-and-food walk pockets; Downtown for sports and business hotels; Galleria only if shopping is the plan. Summer humidity is a character — pack accordingly.

Season & storms

November–April is the pleasant window. Hurricane season awareness is part of Gulf Coast travel — check forecasts in late summer/fall. Wildfire smoke is less the Texas headline than heat and storms, but western US fire maps still matter if you are combining multi-city West trips.
