Phoenix is Vancouver’s winter counterweight: when the North Shore cloud sits for weeks, the Sonoran Desert runs bright, dry days that make outdoor dining feel like a different species of travel. It is not subtle — sprawl, freeways, golf culture — but the desert itself is beautiful if you meet it on morning trails instead of midday parking lots.
Time the trip wrong and the heat is the whole story. Time it right (November–March) and you get hiking weather, citrus light, and hotel rates that still punish Christmas–March weekends.
Flights & when to go
YVR–PHX is a year-round nonstop: WestJet and Air Canada Express both fly it in about three hours, with Porter adding seasonal frequencies. One-stop routings via Seattle, San Francisco, Denver or Las Vegas exist and are worth checking on price alone. US preclearance at YVR applies either way, so you land in Phoenix as a domestic passenger.
Go November–March for the classic snowbird window. April is shoulder. June–August is for people with a specific reason and a pool plan — outdoor sightseeing becomes a 6–9am activity.
Bases: Scottsdale, Tempe, downtown
Old Town Scottsdale: walkable restaurants, art, resort energy — pricier, easiest first-timer base. Tempe: younger, light rail to airport, university edge. Downtown Phoenix: museums, sports, improving walk core — still a car city overall.
Rent a car unless you commit to one resort and rideshares. Distances lie the way LA distances lie.
Desert time (the point of the trip)
Morning hikes beat any spa menu: Camelback (hard), Piestewa Peak, and the easier desert botanical garden walks if heat or knees argue. Bring more water than Vancouver instincts suggest.
Day-trip ceiling: Sedona (~2h) for red rock, or a long Grand Canyon South Rim day (~3.5–4h each way — better as overnight). Check wildfire and heat warnings in summer; Arizona fire season is real even when the valley is “just hot.”
Money notes
Resort fees are not optional fiction — read the fine print. Winter weekend rates spike with Canadian and Midwest snowbirds. Food is excellent at every price band if you chase Sonoran Mexican and not strip-mall chains.
The flight, in numbers
Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 2,000 km from Vancouver, roughly three hours in the air, and — contrary to what most guides still say — it is a year-round nonstop. WestJet and Air Canada Express both fly it through the whole calendar, with Porter adding seasonal capacity into the snowbird months.
The time difference is the local curiosity: Arizona does not observe daylight saving. From March to November, Phoenix runs on the same clock as Vancouver — no time change at all. From November to March, when British Columbia falls back and Arizona does not, Phoenix is one hour ahead. That inverts the usual expectation precisely during the season most Vancouverites actually fly down.
Papers, preclearance and the 30-day rule
YVR is one of eight Canadian airports with US border preclearance: you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Vancouver before boarding and walk off at Sky Harbor as a domestic arrival. Budget three hours at YVR for the departure rather than the two a domestic flight needs.
This page has more reason than most to spell out the length rule, because Phoenix is where Canadian winters go. Canadian citizens need a passport, no ESTA and no visa — but since 11 April 2025 anyone staying 30 consecutive days or more must be registered with US immigration. Fly in and the electronic I-94 issued on arrival registers you automatically. Drive down, as a lot of snowbirds do, and a land crossing may not issue one — in that case Form G-325R must be filed online before the thirtieth day, and everyone 18 or over has to carry the registration notice. Failure to comply is a misdemeanour with a fine of up to USD 5,000. Separately, the six-month admission limit and Canadian residency-day counting for tax are their own questions worth asking an accountant about before a long stay.
What it costs a Canadian
Budget in US dollars and get a card with no foreign transaction fee — over a month in Arizona the standard 2.5% surcharge is a serious number. Sales tax is added at the till rather than shown on the shelf, and tipping is heavier than at home: 18 to 22% in restaurants is the going rate.
Provincial health coverage stops at the border, and Arizona is a place where dehydration and heat put visitors in hospital every summer, so travel medical insurance is a genuine necessity rather than paperwork. Confirm your mobile plan covers the US before you land, and check whether a long stay affects your BC MSP eligibility — the rules are about days outside the province, and snowbird-length trips can cross the line.
