Walk the story, not only the Trail

Cambridge (Harvard Yard + bookstores + riverside) is the best “second city” half-day. Back Bay / Newbury Street for brownstones and shopping. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum if you want one indoor hour.
Where to stay
Back Bay and Downtown Crossing / Theater District keep you walkable. North End hotels are scarce; stay nearby and walk over for dinner. Prices bite in autumn foliage and graduation seasons — book early.
