Chicago is the American city that still feels built for civic scale: a lake that behaves like a sea, architecture that invented the modern skyline, and neighbourhoods that do not apologize for being themselves. From Vancouver it is a longer flight than California, but the payoff is a proper big-city weekend with better bones than most coastal checklist trips.

MDW is the simpler airport but needs a connection from Vancouver. The L Blue Line from ORD to downtown is the local move; from MDW the Orange Line works.
The itinerary that respects your feet
Day 1 — architecture + river: Chicago Architecture Center river cruise earns the cliché. Walk the Riverwalk afterward. Evening in River North or West Loop restaurants.
Day 2 — lakefront + museum one-two: Art Institute (excellent, budget the hours) or Museum Campus (Field/Shedd/Adler — pick one deep, not three shallow). Bike or walk the Lakefront Trail toward Lincoln Park.
Day 3 — neighbourhood: Wicker Park / Logan Square for a non-Loop day, or Hyde Park if you want the University of Chicago + Museum of Science and Industry gravity well.
Where to stay
River North / Near North for hotels-and-walkability; Loop for theatre and commute convenience; West Loop for restaurants-first. You do not need a car downtown — parking is a tax on optimism.
Food honesty
Deep dish is optional theatre; tavern-style thin crust is what many locals actually order. Italian beef, hot dogs with the full garden, and the West Loop dining wave matter more than any single chain pizza pilgrimage.

Papers, preclearance and the 30-day rule
YVR is one of eight Canadian airports with US border preclearance, so you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Vancouver before boarding and land at O'Hare as a domestic passenger — which, at an airport the size of O'Hare, saves more time than it sounds. The cost is at this end: allow three hours at YVR for a US departure.
Canadian citizens need a passport, no ESTA and no visa. Since 11 April 2025, anyone staying 30 consecutive days or more has to be registered with US immigration; arriving by air you receive an electronic I-94 and are registered automatically, while a land crossing may not issue one and then Form G-325R must be filed online before day 30. Irrelevant for a long weekend, relevant if you are working a contract or spending a season.
What it costs a Canadian
Budget in US dollars, and carry a card without a foreign transaction fee — the usual 2.5% is invisible until you read the statement. Sales tax is added at the till, and Chicago's combined rate is one of the higher ones in the country, so restaurant and retail prices land above the sticker. Tipping runs 18 to 22%.
Provincial health coverage does not cross the border; travel medical insurance does the job instead. Check that your mobile plan includes the US before landing rather than after the roaming text arrives.
