What airport work pays — and the clearance nobody warns you about
The wage is not the obstacle at YVR. The obstacle is the pass. Anything inside the restricted area — ramp, baggage, aircraft cleaning, most catering, airside retail stocking — needs a Restricted Area Identity Card, and that means a Transport Canada security clearance with a criminal record check and a five-year background history. Processing takes weeks and sometimes months. Employers know this and hire around it: apply early, answer the history questions completely, and expect a gap between the offer and your first shift.
- Ramp and baggage handling: typically posted in the low-to-mid $20s an hour, with shift premiums for nights and early mornings.
- Airside cleaning and catering: high teens to low $20s, often part-time to start.
- Terminal retail and food service: BC minimum wage upward — $17.85 was the floor in 2025 and it is indexed every 1 June.
- Customer service and check-in agent roles: low-to-mid $20s, usually with airline travel benefits that are worth more than the difference.
The commute is the real filter
The Canada Line's first train reaches YVR around 5am and the last leaves shortly after midnight. A 4:30am ramp shift or a shift that finishes at 1am is a car, a carpool or a taxi — every time. Before you accept, price that in: parking at the airport for staff is not free, and Richmond rents are not lower than East Vancouver ones. This is why airport jobs pay a premium and still turn over.
