Getting to Kamloops from Vancouver
About 355 km on the Coquihalla, which is three and a half to four hours in summer and a genuine mountain drive from November to March. The Coquihalla summit sits above 1,200 m, winter tyres are legally required on this route in the cold months, and closures for snow or crashes happen several times a season. The Fraser Canyon route on Highway 1 through Hope and Lytton takes an hour longer and is the fallback when the Coquihalla closes.
There are also short flights from Vancouver and a Via Rail service that passes through at awkward hours. For most people this is a drive.
The climate is the point
Kamloops sits in a semi-arid pocket where the mountains wring out the rain: roughly 280 mm a year against Vancouver's 1,200, with summer afternoons regularly above 35°C. That is why the lakes here are warm enough to swim in when the coast is not, why the hills are sagebrush rather than cedar, and why the region is fly-fishing country — several hundred lakes are within an hour's drive.
When to go
May-June and September are the comfortable months: warm, dry, and without the July-August heat that makes midday outdoor activity unpleasant. Sun Peaks is 45 minutes north and turns the town into a winter base from December. August can bring wildfire smoke from the interior, so check air quality before committing to a hiking weekend.
What it costs
Accommodation runs well below coastal prices outside tournament weekends — Kamloops hosts a heavy schedule of sports events, and when a national championship is in town every room along Columbia Street is taken. Check the city's event calendar before booking; a Tuesday and a tournament Saturday are different cities.
