Victoria BC Guide 2026: Sights, Food, Hotels & Island Loop

Victoria is BC's capital and Canada's most English-feeling city — double-decker buses, afternoon tea, Parliament domes reflected in the Inner Harbour, and gardens that win international awards. Getting there from Vancouver

Budget day trip: 07:00 ferry over, 19:00 or 21:00 return. With a car add Butchart Gardens, Hatley Castle and Fort Rodd Hill; on foot the Inner Harbour cluster is entirely walkable.

Inner Harbour — the walkable core

Parks, waterfront walks & viewpoints

• Beacon Hill Park — 200 free acres downtown; peacocks roam freely, Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada Highway at Douglas St and the ocean.
• Dallas Road waterfront — 5 km cliff-top path with Olympic Mountain views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
• Ogden Point Breakwater — 800 m concrete pier into the sea at the west end of Dallas Rd; lighthouse at the tip, orcas sometimes visible from shore.
• HAVN Saunas — floating wood-fired saunas in the Inner Harbour; cold plunge in the ocean between sessions (~C$40–60; book ahead).
• Gonzales Hill Regional Park — short drive to a 360° panorama over city, Juan de Fuca and the Olympic range; deer on the lawn, almost no crowds.
• Esquimalt Lagoon — west of downtown; calm birding beach with views of the Olympic Mountains — herons, eagles and migratory shorebirds.
• Willows Beach (Oak Bay) — the classic family swimming beach; shallow and sheltered.

Castles, forts & the Malahat SkyWalk

• Hatley Castle — 2005 Sooke Rd, Colwood (Royal Roads University campus). Dunsmuir family estate; film location for X-Men and Deadpool. Gardens and castle tours ~C$12–18; 25 min west of downtown.
• Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse — 603 Fort Rodd Hill Rd, Colwood. Canada's oldest west-coast lighthouse (1860) plus coastal artillery fort; ~C$9, allow 2 h.
• Government House — 1401 Rockland Ave. Ceremonial residence of the Lieutenant Governor; free public gardens and harbour views. Cary Castle Mews museum (carriages, stables) in the service buildings.
• Malahat SkyWalk — 901 Trans-Canada Hwy, Malahat (45 min north toward Nanaimo). Spiral treetop tower over the Saanich Inlet — new Island attraction; ~C$25–35. Stop driving back from Swartz Bay ferry before hitting Victoria traffic; weekdays before 10:00 beat summer crowds.

Day hikes & nature beyond the city

• East Sooke Regional Park — 45 min west; the 10 km Coast Trail is one of BC's best rugged coastal day hikes (or do a 2–3 h section to Babbington Hill).
• Goldstream Provincial Park — 20 min north on Hwy 1; old-growth forest and a chum salmon run late October–November under the highway bridge.
• Mount Doug (PKOLS) — 30 min return to a summit viewpoint over the city and San Juan Islands; steep but popular sunset spot.

Victoria punches above its weight for restaurants — seafood, British pub culture and a serious coffee scene. Book dinner on summer weekends.

• Red Fish Blue Fish — 1006 Wharf St (on the pier). Line-up-worthy fish tacos and chowder in a recycled shipping container.
• Barb's Fish & Chips — Fisherman's Wharf floating kitchen; classic cod and chips eaten on the dock.

Where to stay

Summer weekends book out by April. If every Victoria room is gone, try Sidney (5 min from Swartz Bay ferry) or Ucluelet on the west coast and loop the Island counter-clockwise.
