Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, sits on the southern tip of Vancouver Island — a 90-minute ferry ride (plus driving) from Vancouver. It is the single best day trip or overnight escape from the city: a walkable Victorian-era harbour town surrounded by ocean, gardens and some of the best whale-watching waters in the world.

Getting there from Vancouver

Cheapest full-day plan: 7:00 ferry over, 19:00 or 21:00 ferry back. With a car you can add Butchart Gardens and Fisgard Lighthouse; on foot, everything around the Inner Harbour is walkable.

• Butchart Gardens — 800 Benvenuto Ave, Brentwood Bay (23 km north of downtown). World-famous 55-acre gardens in a former quarry. Summer hours roughly 8:45–22:00, adult ~C$41; Saturday-night fireworks in July–August.
• Royal BC Museum — 675 Belleville St. First Nations galleries and natural history; adult ~C$30, 2–3 hours well spent.
• BC Parliament Buildings — 501 Belleville St. Free guided tours on weekdays; the building is lit by thousands of bulbs at night.
• Fisherman's Wharf — floating homes, fish & chips at Barb's, resident harbour seals. 15-minute walk or C$14 harbour ferry from the Inner Harbour.
• Beacon Hill Park — free, 200 acres, peacocks, and the Mile 0 marker of the Trans-Canada Highway at the ocean end of Douglas St.
• Craigdarroch Castle — 1050 Joan Crescent. 1890s coal-baron mansion, adult ~C$22.
• Fisgard Lighthouse & Fort Rodd Hill — 603 Fort Rodd Hill Rd, Colwood (car needed). The oldest lighthouse on Canada's west coast, adult ~C$9.

Ocean, beaches and parks around Victoria

• Dallas Road waterfront — 5 km cliff-top walk with Olympic Mountains views; Ogden Point breakwater walk at the west end.
• Willows Beach (Oak Bay) — the classic sandy swimming beach, calm and family-friendly.
• East Sooke Regional Park — 45 min west; the 10 km Coast Trail is one of BC's best rugged day hikes.
• Goldstream Provincial Park — 20 min north on Hwy 1; old-growth forest and a chum salmon run every late October–November.

Whale watching from Victoria

Victoria sits beside the Salish Sea feeding grounds — orca sightings here are among the most reliable in the world (May–October). Established operators, all near the Inner Harbour:
