Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, sits on the southern tip of Vancouver Island โ a 90-minute ferry ride (plus driving) from Vancouver. It is the single best day trip or overnight escape from the city: a walkable Victorian-era harbour town surrounded by ocean, gardens and some of the best whale-watching waters in the world.

Cheapest full-day plan: 7:00 ferry over, 19:00 or 21:00 ferry back. With a car you can add Butchart Gardens and Fisgard Lighthouse; on foot, everything around the Inner Harbour is walkable.

- East Sooke Regional Park โ 45 min west; the 10 km Coast Trail is one of BC's best rugged day hikes.
