Whale Watching in Vancouver & Victoria: Tours, Prices, Season
Published 2026-07-13 ยท FanVancouver Travel Desk
The Salish Sea between Vancouver and Vancouver Island is one of the best places on Earth to see whales in the wild: Bigg's (transient) orcas hunt here year-round, humpbacks have returned in record numbers, and grey whales pass on migration. Tours run roughly April to October, and most operators report sightings on 90 %+ of summer trips โ many offer a free return trip if you see nothing.

Choosing a boat, and practical tips
- Zodiac (open RIB): fastest, most exciting, you feel every wave โ dress warm, they provide flotation suits. Not for kids under ~5 or pregnant guests.
- Covered catamaran: washrooms, heated cabin, easier photography โ best all-round choice for families.
- Bring: sunglasses, warm layer (it is 5โ10 ยฐC colder on the water), zoom lens or binoculars. Motion-sickness tablets 1 h before if unsure.
- Canadian law keeps boats 200โ400 m from orcas; zodiacs cut engines and drift โ the whales often come closer on their own.
- Combine it: several operators run one-way Vancouver โ Victoria whale-watching crossings, which doubles as transport for a Victoria day trip.
