Celebration of Light 2026: Why It Was Cancelled and What Happens in 2027

There is no Honda Celebration of Light in 2026. The three-night international competition was cancelled after its funding came up roughly $1 million short, and in its place the City of Vancouver put on Summer Lights in English Bay — one free night, same beach, same barge, same water. About $2 million paid for it, most of that redirected from the Celebration of Light budget, and the City has been open about it being a one-year bridge while it works to bring the full festival back in 2027.

What the night did not have: competing countries, the radio simulcast, premium beach lounges, the air show, the drone show, the pre-fireworks entertainment programme. What it did have: 25 minutes over English Bay on the Friday of the BC Day long weekend, free for everyone.

How it actually went — the July 31 recap

The show happened, and by Vancouver standards it worked. About 230,000 people came to English Bay for the single night, by producer BrandLive’s preliminary count — roughly what one strong night of the old three-night festival used to draw. The 25-minute display was themed around Expo 86 — civic-pride nostalgia set to the fair’s music — with the pyrotechnic design handled by Winnipeg’s Archangel Fireworks.

Crowd-wise it was a non-event in the best sense. Vancouver police said the map looked like “any other Friday night” despite the influx, crediting years of Celebration of Light experience plus the FIFA World Cup playbook from June. TransLink’s shuttle plan (Burrard Station ↔ Denman) ran as published.

The politics did not go quiet, though. The roughly $2 million bill — $1.4M redirected from the old festival budget plus $600K on top — kept drawing criticism from opposition councillors in an austerity-budget year. Asked on the night whether the City would fund a full 2027 revival, Mayor Ken Sim was noncommittal: organizers would “reassess everything” first. How the night ran: the July 31, 2026 timeline

Where to stand at English Bay — the viewpoints that always work

English Bay Beach is the obvious answer and the worst one if you dislike crowds. The barge sits in the same water it always has, which means every viewpoint that worked for the Celebration of Light worked on July 31 as well, and will work again whenever the next barge show goes up.

• English Bay Beach — dead centre, full sound, the densest crowd in the city. Claim sand by 6 pm.
• Sunset Beach — the overflow, a little side-on, still close. By 6:30 pm.
• Kitsilano Beach — across the water with the downtown skyline behind the shells, noticeably more room. By 7 pm. The parking lot is closed, so walk or bus in.
• Vanier and Hadden Park — the local compromise: nearly the Kits view, much more grass. By 7 pm.
• Second Beach, Stanley Park — angled view, and the easiest exit of the close-in options because you walk out into the park rather than into the West End. Bring a light for the paths.
• Jericho Beach — far enough that it becomes a picnic with fireworks in the background. Arrive whenever.

High tide peaked at about 4.5 m at 8:46 pm that night, so the strip of sand people claimed at 6 pm was underwater by 9. Whatever the date, check the tide before you pick a spot and sit above the driftwood line — that is the difference between watching the finale and moving a wet blanket in the dark.

Getting there and getting home from English Bay

Do not bring a car. On July 31 the West End closed to traffic at 5 pm — generally west of Burrard Street and south of West Georgia Street — and reopened around 11:30 pm. Beach parking at Kits, Hadden Park and Vanier Park was closed for the night, and accessible parking opened at 5 pm on a first-come basis for vehicles displaying a valid permit. SkyTrain ran every two to three minutes through the peak, with modified station access at Burrard, Granville and Waterfront. Shuttle buses ran inbound from Burrard Station to Denman and West Georgia from 6:00 to 9:30 pm, and outbound after the show from Bidwell and West Georgia to Burrard and Waterfront stations. Routes 5, 6 and 23 were rerouted around the closure. SeaBus ran every 10 minutes from 6:30 to 11 pm and every 15 minutes after that, last sailing 1:22 am. TransLink has published a near-identical plan for every fireworks night at English Bay since 2015 — the times move by minutes, not by hours.

The single best piece of advice: when the finale ends, do not walk to the nearest bus stop with everyone else. Either walk 15 minutes east toward a SkyTrain station, or stay on the beach for half an hour and let the crush drain. The queue at Denman and Davie at 10:35 pm is the worst 40 minutes of the evening and it is entirely avoidable.

What you cannot bring

No drones — the airspace over the bay is restricted and the show is a controlled pyrotechnic site. No smoking, no alcohol, no glass containers on the beach. Your own fireworks are illegal in Vancouver year-round, not just on July 31; the fine range is $500 to $10,000. Making an evening of it

The show is 25 minutes at the end of a long summer Friday, so the evening is really about the six hours before it. Come in mid-afternoon, swim while the water is at its warmest, get takeaway from Denman Street before the queues form around 6 pm, and claim a patch above the logs. Sunset is just before 9 pm and the hour after it — the sky still blue over the water, the barge lit, the crowd settling — is the part people remember.
