Vancouver to Calgary Road Trip (2026): 5-Day Rockies Loop
Published 2026-07-13 ยท FanVancouver Travel Desk
The classic Vancouver โ Rockies โ Calgary โ home loop is 1,000โ1,200 km depending on detours โ best driven May through September when mountain passes are clear and lake trails are open. This five-day itinerary balances driving legs with overnight bases so you are not racing 12-hour days. Reverse the loop (Calgary first) if flights land in Alberta; the sights are the same.
Before you go
- Summer tires OK MayโOctober on Hwy 1 and Trans-Canada; check pass closures on DriveBC and 511 Alberta.
- NovemberโMarch: winter tires mandatory on many BC mountain highways (M+S minimum; chains may be required in storms). Joffre Lakes and high passes are not day-trip territory in January.
- Parks Canada passes โ Banff/Yoho/Jasper day fees or annual Discovery Pass; book Banff gondola and Lake Louise parking online in July.
- Calgary Stampede โ early July (2026: check calgarystampede.com); Calgary hotels sell out; book 6+ months ahead if you want rodeo + Nashville North.
Five-day loop โ day by day
| Day | Leg | Distance | Base & highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Vancouver โ Kamloops | ~355 km / 4 h | Coquihalla Hwy 5; overnight Kamloops โ water sports on the Thompson if time |
| Day 2 | Kamloops โ Banff | ~410 km / 4.5 h | Golden + Yoho optional; Emerald Lake detour adds 1 h โ worth it |
| Day 3 | Banff + Lake Louise | ~60 km local | Gondola AM; Moraine Lake / Lake Louise PM (shuttle booking essential) |
| Day 4 | Banff โ Calgary | ~130 km / 1.5 h | Afternoon Calgary Tower / Stampede Park; urban dinner |
| Day 5 | Calgary โ Vancouver via Revelstoke | ~700 km / 8 h | Longest drive โ start 06:00; Rogers Pass photo stops; home by evening |
Day 1 โ Vancouver to Kamloops
Leave Vancouver before 08:00 to beat Coquihalla traffic. Stop Hope for coffee, Othello Tunnels if open (springโfall), fuel in Merritt. Kamloops base: riverside hotels near Thompson River โ not scenic glory, but logical mileage. Optional: extend to Wells Gray Provincial Park waterfalls if you add a day.
Day 2 โ Kamloops to Banff (Yoho detour)
Trans-Canada through Golden โ enter Yoho National Park โ Emerald Lake (rent canoe, 45 min walk around shore) โ Natural Bridge โ descend to Banff townsite. If Joffre Lakes pass is on your wish list, that detour is west of Pemberton before Day 1 or a dedicated Sea-to-Sky day from Vancouver โ see Joffre in moderate hikes (permit + day pass required).
Day 3 โ Banff and Lake Louise
- Banff Gondola โ morning sulphur mountain views (~C$65; book slot).
- Lake Louise โ shuttle mandatory peak summer; Moraine Lake separate shuttle โ reserve both on Parks Canada site.
- Plain of Six Glaciers tea house hike if you want exercise โ 5 h return, open summer only.

Day 4 โ Banff to Calgary
Short highway leg โ use the afternoon in Calgary: Stampede Park (year-round museum; rodeo July only), Studio Bell (National Music Centre), or Prince's Island Park on the Bow River. Stay airport-side if Day 5 flight, or central if continuing the loop.
Day 5 โ Calgary to Vancouver via Revelstoke
The big drive: Calgary โ Rogers Pass (Glacier National Park) โ Revelstoke lunch โ Sicamous โ Coquihalla home. Allow 8โ9 h with photo stops; no room for Banff detours today. Alternative: split into two days with overnight Revelstoke or Sicamous if you have a sixth day.
Reverse loop option
Fly into Calgary, drive west to Banff โ Kamloops โ Vancouver drop-off. Same distances; jet lag favors hitting the mountains first. Ski season variant: add Banff Sunshine or Lake Louise ski โ winter tires non-negotiable.
Camping and budget variant
Replace hotels with Parks Canada and BC Parks campsites โ Tunnel Mountain (Banff), Lake Louise overflow, or Revelstoke town CG. Reserve on opening day; see camping booking guide. Fire bans and pass permits apply JuneโSeptember.
Shorter Rockies taste without Calgary: Sea-to-Sky and Whistler day trips ยท harder hike context: moderate hikes including Joffre.
