Indigenous Culture in Vancouver (2026): 15 Essential Stops
Published 2026-07-13 · FanVancouver Travel Desk
Metro Vancouver sits on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Indigenous culture here is not a single museum visit — it is living art, governance, cuisine, land stewardship and stories told in cedar, stone and glass. This guide maps 15 places where visitors can learn respectfully, with etiquette that protects both hosts and guests.
Land acknowledgement
Many events and institutions open with a land acknowledgement — a statement that names the Nations whose lands you occupy and recognizes that colonization displaced them without treaty in this region. It is not a performance for tourists to recite from memory; it is an invitation to learn whose land you walk on and to support Indigenous-led businesses and artists. Start with Musqueam and Squamish Nation community sites for history beyond museum labels.
Visitor etiquette
- Do not touch totem poles or carved house posts — cedar is sacred and oils from hands damage carvings.
- Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, regalia or restricted gallery items; many museums mark no-photo zones.
- Do not call poles "totems" as souvenirs — buy art from credited Indigenous artists (Bill Reid Gallery shop, MOA shop, Native Art Gallery on Granville Island).
- Skip the "Pocahontas" questions — staff are educators, not props; read exhibit text first.
- Support Indigenous-owned businesses — restaurants, tours and galleries listed below put revenue back into communities.
