Britannia Mine Museum Guide (2026): Underground Tour & BOOM!
Published 2026-07-13 ยท FanVancouver Travel Desk
The 20-storey concrete mill on Highway 99 is impossible to miss โ for decades it was the largest copper mine in the British Empire, then an acid-rain poster child, now one of BC's best family museums. Britannia Mine Museum, 1 Forbes Way, Britannia Beach (50 min from Vancouver), delivers an underground train ride, explosive multimedia show and hands-on gold panning. Budget 2โ3 hours; adult admission ~C$42 (2026; youth and family packages less).
History โ from copper empire to Superfund to museum
Mining started 1904; the community peaked at 60,000 residents equivalent output. The mill processed ore until 1974. Acid mine drainage turned Howe Sound toxic โ a remediation story BC schools still teach. The museum opened after cleanup proved the sound could recover; today sea lions and salmon have returned outside the windows.
Underground train tour
Ride a miner's train into the original tunnels with a guide explaining drills, dynamite and the 1915 explosion that killed 56 men. Hard hat provided; constant 10 ยฐC underground โ bring a layer even in August. Not claustrophobic by theme-park standards but tight in spots.
BOOM! show โ the mill comes alive
The BOOM! multimedia experience projects onto the historic mill interior โ shaking floors, flying sparks (safely), story of a 1920s shift change. Kids under 8 may cover ears; ear protection available. Included with general admission in 2026 โ confirm at ticket desk.
Gold panning & minerals hall
Outdoor water troughs โ keep what you find (usually flakes, not nuggets). Mineral galleries explain porphyry copper geology that made the site rich. The Beaty-Lundin Visitor Centre has interactive exhibits for younger kids.
The deer story locals tell
After closure, a tame deer wandered the site for years โ mascot of regeneration. Today you might see black bears on the hillside (stay in designated paths). Wildlife recovery parallels Howe Sound's marine comeback โ pair the visit with a seafood lunch in Squamish.
