Checked against each organiser’s own site on 15 August 2026. Where an organiser has not published 2026 dates, this page says so rather than guessing.

  2. Arrive early for free outdoor viewing; exits jam after finales.
  3. Use transit when venues sit near SkyTrain/bus corridors.

The season, festival by festival

The live feed further down this page is everything happening in Metro Vancouver this week, pulled automatically from ticketing sites. This section is the other half: the dozen or so events big enough to plan a trip around, checked by hand against the organiser's own listing.

Vancouver's event year does not end with summer — it changes shape. Through August the city is still outdoors: free neighbourhood block parties, night markets that run until midnight, open-air Shakespeare in Vanier Park. From late August the PNE Fair takes over Hastings Park for 15 fair days across a 17-day span, and by September the crowd moves indoors to the Fringe on Granville Island and, in October, to the film festival. That shift matters for planning: an August evening event usually needs nothing but a bus ticket and a jacket, while September and October dates sell out days in advance.

Everything below is checked against the organiser's own listing, and the price shown is what the organiser publishes, not an estimate. Where an event is annual but has not yet published its 2026 dates — the Christmas market at Jack Poole Plaza, Bright Nights in Surrey — the card says so instead of guessing. Two long-running festivals are gone and are not listed here: the Vancouver Mural Festival wound down after 2024, and the Celebration of Light fireworks did not run this year.

Getting there: almost every venue on this page is on the SkyTrain or a frequent bus. Hastings Park (PNE) is the No. 14 or No. 16 bus from downtown; Granville Island is the Aquabus from Yaletown or the No. 50; the Richmond Night Market is a three-minute walk from Bridgeport Station. Late-night SkyTrain runs to roughly 1:15 AM on weekends — check the last train before you settle in for a headliner.

BC Day Long Weekend
📅 Saturday 1 – Monday 3 August 2026
📍 Across Metro Vancouver
Monday is a statutory holiday in British Columbia. Banks, government offices and most professional services close; malls and restaurants stay open. TransLink runs a Sunday schedule, so buses come every 20–30 minutes instead of 10. It is the busiest beach weekend of the year — Kitsilano and English Bay parking lots fill before 11 AM, and the Stanley Park causeway backs up all afternoon.

🎭 Arts · Free
Astro Arts Festival
📅 Friday 7 – Sunday 9 August 2026
📍 Astro Club Artist Facility, Mount Pleasant
A free, all-ages block party with more than 30 experimental murals painted live over three days, plus a gallery show and local music. This is the event that picked up the thread after the Vancouver Mural Festival wound down in 2024, and it is concentrated in a few walkable blocks rather than spread across the city — you can see the whole thing in an afternoon.
Outdoor summer food event in Metro Vancouver
🍴 Food & Drink
Ribfest Langley
📅 Friday 14 – Sunday 16 August 2026
📍 McLeod Athletic Park, 20450 62 Ave, Langley
Rotary-run barbecue festival: competition rib teams from across North America, live bands and a beer garden, with proceeds going to local Rotary projects. Entry is free and you pay per plate at the trucks. From Vancouver it is roughly an hour on the Expo Line to Surrey plus the 502 bus — go early evening, when the queues drop.
Dumplings at a Metro Vancouver food festival
🍴 Food & Drink
BC Dumpling Festival
📅 Saturday 15 August 2026
📍 Coquitlam
A one-day food festival built around dumplings from across Asia and beyond — vendors, live entertainment and cooking demonstrations. Coquitlam is the end of the Millennium Line, about 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver, which makes this one of the easier suburban festivals to reach without a car.

Free Late-Summer Nights
📅 Weeknights through 27 August 2026
📍 Confederation Park (Burnaby) & The Shipyards (North Vancouver)
Three free series overlap in August. Burnaby Summer Stages runs Tuesday to Thursday evenings in Confederation Park; Burnaby Summer Cinema screens films outdoors on Fridays; and the Shipyards Night Market fills the North Vancouver waterfront on Friday evenings with food trucks, makers and live music. Bring a blanket — the grass is damp by 9 PM even in August.

The PNE Fair
📅 22 August – 7 September 2026 · closed 24 & 31 August · 11 AM–11 PM
📍 PNE / Hastings Park, Hastings St & Renfrew St
Vancouver's oldest annual event and the anchor of late summer: the agriculture barns, the wooden roller coaster at Playland, the Summer Night Concert series included with fair admission, and the food building that people argue about all year. Note the two dark days — the fair is closed on 24 and 31 August. Buy online: gate prices are higher, and the 14 and 16 buses from downtown are packed after 6 PM.

Port Day at Canada Place
📅 Saturday 29 August 2026
📍 Canada Place, 999 Canada Place
One free day a year when the working port opens up: tugboat and fireboat demonstrations on the water, container-terminal exhibits, harbour tours and family activities on the promenade. It is a genuinely good way to understand the thing Vancouver's economy actually runs on, and it is a five-minute walk from Waterfront Station.

Bard on the Beach — Final Weeks
📅 Runs to Saturday 19 September 2026 · Tue–Sun
📍 Vanier Park, Kitsilano
Shakespeare in tents on the water, with the North Shore mountains behind the stage — the single most Vancouver piece of theatre there is. September performances are the ones locals book: the light through the open back of the tent at 7 PM is better than midsummer, and the mosquitoes are gone. Bring a layer; it gets cold fast once the sun drops behind Kits Point.
Granville Island Public Market, Vancouver
🎭 80+ shows
🎭 Arts
Vancouver Fringe Festival
📅 Thursday 10 – Sunday 20 September 2026
📍 Granville Island and pop-up venues
Eleven days, more than 80 productions, no jury and no censorship — shows get in by lottery, and the artists keep 100% of the base ticket price. Tickets are cheap by theatre standards and shows run 60 minutes, so people stack three or four in an evening and compare notes in the beer tent afterwards. Buy a multi-show pass if you plan more than two.

Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF)
📅 Thursday 1 – Sunday 11 October 2026
📍 Downtown Vancouver cinemas
The 45th edition: roughly 150 features and 90 shorts, plus talks, live performances and industry events across downtown venues. The full programme is announced on 26 August and tickets, passes and packs go on sale on 27 August — the gala screenings and anything with a director Q&A sell out within days of that.

Fright Nights at Playland
📅 October evenings — 2026 dates confirmed by the organiser in late summer
📍 Playland, PNE / Hastings Park
Western Canada's largest haunt: haunted houses, scare zones and the Playland rides running in the dark, on selected evenings through October. The organiser publishes the exact nights and on-sale date in late summer, so we are not printing dates here — check the official site before you plan around it. It is 19+ on some nights and genuinely intense; it is not a small-children event.

Eastside Culture Crawl
📅 Thursday 19 – Sunday 22 November 2026 · Thu–Fri 5–10 PM, Sat–Sun 11 AM–6 PM
📍 Studios across East Vancouver
Four days when several hundred painters, printmakers, jewellers and furniture makers open their actual working studios to anyone who walks in — free, no ticket, no reservation. 2026 is the 30th anniversary. Pick two or three buildings rather than trying to cover the whole map, and go Thursday evening if you want to talk to the artists rather than queue.

Vancouver Christmas Market
📅 Opens mid-November and runs to 24 December — exact 2026 dates confirmed by the organiser in autumn
📍 Jack Poole Plaza, downtown Vancouver
German-style market on the waterfront: timber huts, mulled wine, the carousel and the spinning Christmas pyramid, right beside the Olympic cauldron. Weekday evenings before 6 PM are walkable; December weekends are shoulder-to-shoulder. Tickets are dated and cheaper online than at the gate.

📅 Open daily, 9 AM–7 PM (market)
📍 1669 Johnston St, under the Granville Bridge
The public market, a working artisan district and half a dozen theatres on one peninsula. Free to walk in; you pay only for what you eat and buy. Come before 11 AM on a weekend or after 4 PM — the middle of the day in the market building is a crush. The Aquabus from Yaletown costs less than parking and takes four minutes.

Stanley Park — Year Round
📅 Daily, all year
📍 Stanley Park, West End
Ten kilometres of seawall, 27 kilometres of forest trail, the totem poles at Brockton Point and the third-largest aquarium in North America. Autumn is arguably the best season here: the big-leaf maples turn through October, the summer crowds are gone, and the light off the water in the late afternoon is the reason half the city's postcards exist. Free to enter; parking is paid year-round.

Richmond Night Market
📅 Fri–Sun and holiday Mondays to October 2026 · 7 PM–midnight
📍 8351 River Rd, Richmond — 3 min walk from Bridgeport Station
The largest night market in North America: hundreds of food stalls, most of them Asian street food you cannot get anywhere else in the region, plus retail rows and a stage. Small gate admission, cash and card accepted at most stalls now. Go on a Friday — Saturday queues for the popular stalls run 30 minutes.

Frequently asked

What is on in Vancouver in August 2026?

The PNE Fair runs 22 August to 7 September at Hastings Park (closed 24 and 31 August), the free Astro Arts Festival paints live murals in Mount Pleasant 7–9 August, Ribfest Langley is 14–16 August, the BC Dumpling Festival is 15 August in Coquitlam, and Port Day opens the working harbour at Canada Place free on 29 August. Bard on the Beach and the Richmond Night Market run all month.

Is the Celebration of Light fireworks happening in 2026?

No. The Honda Celebration of Light did not run in 2026. English Bay still gets busy on warm evenings, but there is no fireworks competition this year, and anything advertising one is out of date.

What replaced the Vancouver Mural Festival?

The Vancouver Mural Festival wound down after 2024. The closest successor is the Astro Arts Festival in Mount Pleasant, a free three-day block party with more than 30 murals painted live, running 7–9 August 2026. The existing murals from previous festivals are still on the walls and free to walk between year-round.

When do Fright Nights 2026 tickets go on sale?

Fright Nights 2026 runs on select nights from 7 to 31 October, with tickets from $39 for the quietest dates and the highest tier on Halloween itself. Full nights, hours and tiers are in our Halloween in Vancouver 2026 guide; buy through frightnights.ca rather than any date you see repeated on aggregator sites, which are usually last year's.

How do I get to Vancouver events without a car?

Almost everything on this page is on transit. Hastings Park (PNE) is the 14 or 16 bus from downtown; Granville Island is the 50 bus or the Aquabus from Yaletown; the Richmond Night Market is a three-minute walk from Bridgeport Station; Canada Place is at Waterfront Station. A day pass costs less than most event parking, and SkyTrain runs to roughly 1:15 AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

How this calendar works

The listings above are rebuilt every morning from public event feeds and venue calendars, so what you see is what is actually on sale or open this week — not a hand-written list that quietly goes stale. Dates and prices come from the organiser; we do not sell tickets.

If you are planning further ahead than a week, the recurring festivals in the sidebar repeat on roughly the same dates every year — that is the calendar locals actually plan their summer around. For a month-by-month view, start with the Vancouver summer guide.

Vancouver Events FAQ

What are the best free events in Vancouver?
Vancouver runs an unusual number of genuinely free events: Car Free Day street festivals in June, the Khatsahlano Street Party on West 4th in early July, Canada Day at Canada Place, and — in years when funding lands — fireworks over English Bay. The Honda Celebration of Light did not run in 2026, the Khatsahlano Street Party on West 4th in early July, Canada Day at Canada Place, and free outdoor concerts in most neighbourhood parks through summer. Our free things to do guide lists the year-round ones.
When is the Vancouver Jazz Festival?
The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival runs for about ten days from late June into the first days of July each year, with paid headline shows plus a large free programme at David Lam Park and around Granville Island. Exact dates are announced each spring on the festival site.
What is the best month to visit Vancouver for festivals?
July is the densest month — fireworks, street parties, folk music and outdoor cinema overlap almost every weekend, and the weather is reliably dry. August is a close second and adds the PNE Fair and Pride. If you want festivals without peak-season hotel prices, aim for the second half of June or the first two weeks of September.
Can I get to most events without a car?
Yes. Nearly every venue on this page is within a short walk of a SkyTrain station or a frequent bus route, and event nights are exactly when driving downtown is worst — parking around BC Place and Hastings Park fills hours before doors. A day pass covers unlimited travel; see getting around Vancouver.
