How to get here
There is rarely a useful nonstop. Toronto, Paris or London are the usual pivots. On the ground: filmed, seguridad, agosto.
What to do first
Same rule as Mexico: city and seawall first. Grouse when you can see the mountain, not when the app says “sunny” and the inlet is soup.
Getting here
There is no regular nonstop between Spain and Vancouver. From Madrid or Barcelona the realistic routings connect through London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Toronto or Montreal, and the door-to-door day runs fourteen to eighteen hours. Connecting in Canada rather than Europe or the US has one practical advantage: you clear Canadian immigration at the first Canadian airport, so arriving in Vancouver is a domestic walk-off.
Vancouver is nine hours behind peninsular Spain.
From YVR to downtown
From YVR, the Canada Line reaches downtown in about 26 minutes. Weekdays before 6:30 p.m. the trip is two zones — CAD 4.20 plus the CAD 6.50 airport AddFare, CAD 10.70. Evenings, weekends and statutory holidays it is one zone, CAD 9.35. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work directly at the fare gates, and there is no AddFare on the journey back out.
Paperwork, money and plugs
Spanish passport holders need no visitor visa for a short stay, but an eTA is required to fly: CAD 7 on the Government of Canada site, valid five years or until the passport expires. Do it the week you book, not the night before — approval is usually instant but not guaranteed.
Plugs are flat two-pin at 120 V, so bring an adapter for European type C and F plugs. Prices are advertised without tax: 5% federal plus 7% provincial is added at the till, and tipping of 15 to 20% is expected in restaurants and bars. Between the two, a menu price of CAD 25 becomes about CAD 33.
Your first day
Two adjustments catch Spanish visitors out. Dinner happens early here — many kitchens stop taking orders at 21:00, and 22:30 is late-night, not normal. When to come
Come between late June and mid-September for dry weather. Anyone travelling in August should keep an eye on the BC wildfire and smoke map: the city is rarely at risk, but interior smoke can drift over and change what a hiking day is worth.
