You already know mountains. Vancouver's trick is putting the same kind of peaks behind a working harbour, a Chinatown and an ocean beach, twenty minutes apart. Zurich runs a seasonal nonstop of about ten hours; otherwise it is one stop through a European or Canadian hub.
How to get here
Zurich is the usual gate; Geneva connects. One stop via Frankfurt, London or Montreal is normal. Use /de/ if you prefer German.
What to do first
Do not treat Grouse as the Jungfrau. It is a city mountain: good views, tourist machinery, done by dinner. Save a real day for the Sea-to-Sky if the weather holds.
Getting here
Edelweiss Air flies Zurich to Vancouver nonstop as a seasonal summer service — about ten hours over roughly 8,300 km. Outside that window, and from Geneva or Basel at any time of year, it is one stop: Frankfurt, Munich, London, Amsterdam or Toronto, with the day stretching to thirteen or fourteen hours. Connecting through Toronto or Montreal means clearing Canadian immigration there, so the Vancouver arrival is a domestic walk-off.
Vancouver is nine hours behind Switzerland year-round. Leave in the late morning, land in the afternoon of the same day.
From YVR to downtown
The Canada Line reaches downtown from inside the terminal in about 26 minutes. Weekdays before 6:30 p.m. that is two zones — CAD 4.20 plus the CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare, CAD 10.70. After 6:30 p.m., at weekends and on statutory holidays it is a single zone, CAD 9.35. It is a fraction of a Swiss airport transfer and, by local standards, unusually punctual. A taxi downtown is a flat CAD 36.
Paperwork, money and plugs
Swiss passport holders need no visitor visa for a short stay, but flying to Canada requires an eTA — CAD 7 on the Government of Canada site, valid five years or until the passport expires. Apply on canada.ca directly.
Sockets here are flat two-pin at 120 V, so a Swiss type J plug needs an adapter — a European type C adapter will not always help you either. Prices are quoted before tax (5% federal, 7% provincial, added at the till) and tipping of 15 to 20% is expected in restaurants, which together make eating out feel less cheap than the menu suggests.

When to come
July to mid-September is the dry season and the only reliable window for clear ridgelines. Winter here is mild and wet in the city with heavy snow on the local mountains — Whistler's season runs deep into spring, and the vertical is real even if the villages are younger than yours. In August, the smoke and AQHI page decides whether a summit day is worth doing.
