Vancouver is the long way from Australia — fifteen hours or so nonstop from Sydney — but it is the North American city that rewards it most: English-speaking, outdoors by default, and green when your own summer has gone. Come between June and September, when our seasons are the opposite of yours.
How to get here
Sydney is the usual origin; Melbourne and Brisbane connect. If a YVR nonstop is on sale, take it — the LAX/SFO connection adds a border you do not need. Land, Canada Line, shower, seawall.
What to do first
You already know beaches. Come for mountains-next-to-the-city and Stanley Park’s seawall. Whistler is a separate overnight, not a day trip after a 14-hour flight.
Getting here
Sydney is the nonstop: Air Canada and Qantas both fly Sydney–Vancouver year-round, roughly fourteen to fifteen hours over about 12,500 km of Pacific. Melbourne has no direct service — you connect through Sydney, Auckland or a US west coast hub, and the day runs to nineteen or twenty hours door to door. Brisbane and Perth are the same story with more of it.
The time difference is the largest of any market we write for: Vancouver is 17 hours behind Sydney during our summer and 19 behind during our winter, when Australia is on daylight saving and we are not. Crossing the date line westbound costs you a day on the way out and gives it back on the way home.
From YVR to downtown
The Canada Line runs from inside the terminal to downtown in about 26 minutes. Weekdays before 6:30 p.m. it is two zones — CAD 4.20 plus the CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare, CAD 10.70. Evenings, weekends and statutory holidays the whole system is one zone, so CAD 9.35. An Australian contactless card taps straight at the gate. A taxi downtown is a flat CAD 36, not a meter.
Paperwork, money and plugs
Australian passport holders need no visitor visa for a short stay, but flying to Canada requires an eTA: CAD 7 on the Government of Canada website, valid five years or until the passport expires. It is the same idea as your own ETA system and takes about as long.
Two money habits do not travel. Prices here are advertised before tax — 5% federal plus 7% provincial gets added at the till, so the shelf price is never the price — and tipping is expected at 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars rather than being a rounding gesture. Sockets are flat two-pin at 120 V, so type I plugs need an adapter; dual-voltage chargers are fine.
Your first day
Fifteen hours and a date line are not fixed by willpower. Give day one to the flat stuff — the seawall through Stanley Park, an early dinner, a real night's sleep — and put the mountains on day two. Once you are functioning, the Whistler guide covers the Sea-to-Sky without a rental car.
When to come
Come during the Australian winter. June to September is Vancouver's dry season — long evenings, mountains visible, everything open — and it is precisely when you most want out of Melbourne or Sydney weather. Our winter, your summer, is mild, grey and wet at sea level, with excellent skiing twenty minutes from downtown if that is the point of the trip. Check the fire and smoke map in August.
