📖 Match Report
The 54,500 fans inside BC Place came hoping to see Canada seal their place in the knockout stage with a win. Instead, they got something more complicated — a narrow defeat, a proud goal, and ultimately the same reward: Canada are through to the Round of 32 for the first time in their footballing history.
Switzerland, entering the match already with 4 points and needing a result to guarantee Group B honours, were organised and dangerous from the first whistle. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a precise header from a Xhaka corner — the Borussia Mönchengladbach striker rising above two defenders to direct a perfect ball into the bottom corner.
Canada pushed back but struggled to find space against Switzerland's compact defensive shape. The Nati doubled their lead in the 56th minute when Ruben Vargas unleashed a 25-yard drive that took a wicked deflection off a Canadian leg, leaving Maxime Crépeau with no chance.
With Canada 2–0 down and the crowd growing anxious, substitute Promise David sparked hope with one of the goals of the tournament. Brought on in the 73rd minute, David touched the ball for the first time in the 78th minute — and on his very first contact, turned and hammered a low, precise finish into the far corner. BC Place erupted. The noise was unlike anything Vancouver had heard.
Canada pushed for an equaliser that would have kept their home advantage alive for the knockout rounds, but Switzerland held firm. The final whistle was met with applause, then celebration — because while Canada lost the match, they won something bigger: history.
