Heathrow is the default UK departure for Vancouver: one long westbound flight, arriving the same calendar day, then a twenty-six-minute train into a downtown that still has mountains at the end of the street.
Flight: LHR–YVR nonstops are the prize. Gatwick/Manchester usually mean a connection. Distance: about 7,600 km. Time difference: 8 hours in summer.
Land, do not rent a car, sleep downtown or Yaletown. Tomorrow: seawall. The day after: Stanley Park or a North Shore lookout if the air is clear.
Getting here
London to Vancouver is the classic long-haul into western Canada: about nine and a half to ten and a half hours nonstop from Heathrow, roughly 7,600 km on a polar-ish great circle over Greenland. Gatwick has run seasonal services in some years; most of the year Heathrow is the realistic option, with one-stop alternatives through Calgary, Toronto or a US hub.
Vancouver is eight hours behind London. A midday departure lands in the afternoon, local time, on the same day.
From YVR to downtown
The Canada Line SkyTrain leaves from inside the terminal building and takes about 26 minutes to Waterfront in the middle of downtown. Weekday daytime it is a two-zone fare, CAD 4.20 plus the CAD 6.50 airport AddFare — CAD 10.70. After 6:30 p.m. and all weekend everything is one zone, so CAD 9.35. Contactless Visa or Mastercard works straight at the gate. There is no Heathrow-Express-style premium option and no need for one; a taxi is a flat CAD 36 downtown.
Paperwork, money and plugs
British passport holders need no visitor visa for a short stay, but flying to Canada needs an eTA — CAD 7, applied for on the Government of Canada website, valid five years or until the passport expires. It takes minutes in most cases. Beware the lookalike agencies that buy the search ads: the form is the same and the fee is not.
Canada uses flat two- and three-pin plugs at 120 V, so a UK type G plug needs an adapter; dual-voltage chargers are fine, kettles and hair dryers are not. The bigger adjustment is money: displayed prices exclude 5% GST and 7% provincial tax, and tipping runs 15 to 20% — the two together add roughly a third to a restaurant bill compared with what the menu says.
Your first day
British visitors consistently underestimate two things: how far apart the sights are once you leave the downtown peninsula, and how quickly the weather changes when you go up. When to come
If you are escaping British weather, come between mid-June and mid-September — that is when Vancouver is genuinely dry. Outside it, the climate is remarkably close to home: mild, grey and wet, which surprises people who pictured Canada as snow. Real snow lives on the mountains, twenty minutes north.

First 48 hours after Heathrow, without wasting a day on jet lag
Do not book Grouse Mountain for landing day. The light will be wrong and you will hate the gondola queue. Land, Canada Line to Waterfront, check in, seawall toward Stanley Park as far as Third Beach or back at Sunset Beach if legs are done. Dinner in Yaletown or Kits if you still have daylight. Grouse or a ferry is day two, after a full night.
If your inbound is a red-eye that lands 16:00–18:00, skip the park loop: showers, an early dinner, and a 21:00 lights-out will save tomorrow. Vancouver rewards the second morning more than the first evening.
Money and contactless, for UK visitors specifically
Contactless Visa/Mastercard works on TransLink gates the same way a Compass tap does. You do not need to buy a physical card on day one unless you want a DayPass loaded for a heavy transit day ($12.55 adult at last check — confirm on translink.ca). Heathrow-style “express” trains do not exist here; the Canada Line is the express.
