How to get here

Air Canada flies Singapore–Vancouver nonstop year-round. Treat a connection through Tokyo, Hong Kong or Seoul as a backup fare, not the default: you already have the rare one-shot Pacific hop. At YVR follow signs for the Canada Line, not the taxi queue, unless you are travelling with a lot of luggage.

What to do first

The time change is the hard part, not the city. Walk the seawall on day one, eat early, sleep. Grouse and Capilano keep. Richmond’s mall food courts are the closest thing Vancouver has to a hawker centre if you want something familiar before you go looking for mountains. Check wildfire smoke before any summit day in August.

Getting here

Singapore to Vancouver is about 12,800 km and fourteen to fifteen hours in the air — one of the longest routes Air Canada flies, and one of the few true nonstops between Southeast Asia and Western Canada. The aircraft is usually a wide-body out of Changi; you leave a tropical evening and land in a city that, in summer, still asks for a jumper by the water after six.

Vancouver is fifteen hours behind Singapore from March to November and sixteen in winter (Singapore has no daylight saving). You do not gain a calendar day the way Tokyo arrivals do. Treat the first afternoon as recovery, not a hike.

From YVR to downtown

YVR is on Sea Island, about 12 km from downtown. The Canada Line runs from inside the terminal to Waterfront station in about 26 minutes. Weekdays before 6:30 p.m. that is two zones: CAD 4.20 plus the CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare, so CAD 10.70. Evenings, weekends and statutory holidays the network is one zone and the same ride is CAD 9.35. A contactless Visa or Mastercard taps the gate; you do not need a Compass card. A taxi downtown is a flat CAD 36, not a meter.

There is no AddFare on the way back to the airport. If you have been through Changi, YVR will feel small — follow the Canada Line pictograms rather than the arrivals-hall taxi touts.

Paperwork, money and plugs

Singapore passport holders do not need a visitor visa for a short stay, but flying in requires an eTA: CAD 7 on the official Government of Canada site, valid five years or until the passport expires. Apply there, not through the agencies that buy the search ads.

English is an official language in Singapore and the working language here, so the city does not need a translation layer. Two habits do not travel. Prices on the shelf exclude tax — 5% GST plus 7% provincial tax appear at the till — and tipping is expected at 15 to 20% in restaurants with table service. Sockets here are flat type A/B at 120 V; your type G plug will not fit, so pack an adapter. Dual-voltage chargers are fine; a hair dryer from home usually is not.

Your first day

Do not book Grouse Mountain for the afternoon you land. Walk the Coal Harbour seawall from Canada Place toward Stanley Park, eat early, sleep. If you want food that tastes like home before you commit to the mountains, Richmond — one Canada Line ride south of downtown — has the densest Singaporean, Malaysian and Hong Kong cooking in the region. It is not a hawker centre, but it is the closest this city gets.

In August, check the live fire and smoke map before any North Shore day. Smoke from the Interior can flatten the view without warning.

When to come

Come in our summer. June to early September is the dry window: long evenings, mountains visible, everything open — the opposite of the year-round heat and rain you are leaving. Our winter is mild and wet at sea level, with skiing twenty minutes from downtown if that is the point of the trip. Typhoon season in the South China Sea does not apply here; wildfire smoke in August does.

Common questions

Is there a direct flight from Singapore to Vancouver?

Yes. Air Canada flies Singapore Changi to Vancouver nonstop year-round, about fourteen to fifteen hours over roughly 12,800 km. Connections through Tokyo, Hong Kong or Seoul exist if the nonstop is sold out or priced badly, but they turn a long day into a very long one.

Do Singapore citizens need a visa for Canada?

No visitor visa for short stays, but flying in requires an eTA — CAD 7 on the official Government of Canada site, valid five years or until your passport expires. Apply there, not through copycat agencies.

What is the time difference between Singapore and Vancouver?

Vancouver is 15 hours behind Singapore from March to November and 16 hours behind in winter. Singapore does not use daylight saving, so the gap changes when British Columbia moves its clocks.
