A haircut in Metro Vancouver is not one market but three. Downtown and Yaletown price like a big city — senior stylists, product lines you recognise, and a wait for the person you want. Mount Pleasant, Commercial Drive and East Van charge noticeably less for work that is just as good, often from the same stylists a few years earlier in their careers. Richmond and Burnaby run their own scene, with salons that specialise in Asian hair texture, perms and colour correction that the downtown rooms will happily refer you to.

The prices below come from the published price lists of Metro Vancouver salons, read directly from their own websites in July 2026. Each figure is the lowest price that salon publishes for that service, which is what you actually want to compare — a “from” price that a long or thick head of hair will move upward.

Where to look, by neighbourhood

Gastown and Mount Pleasant hold the design-led shops — sharp cuts, a strong men’s trade, and stylists who post their own work. Robson and downtown are built for convenience and same-week availability, at a premium. Kitsilano leans blonde and balayage. Commercial Drive is the cheapest reliable barbering in the city. Richmond, especially around Aberdeen and No. 3 Road, is where to go for Asian hair specialists and perms; Burnaby’s Metrotown area is the same trade at slightly lower prices. On the North Shore, Lonsdale is the compact, walkable option.

Cutting the bill honestly

Training salons are the one genuine discount in town: Vancouver Community College and Blanche Macdonald Centre both run student clinics where supervised students cut and colour for a fraction of salon rates. Book ahead, allow twice the time, and understand that a supervising instructor signs off on the work. Otherwise, a mid-week late-morning appointment with a junior stylist at a good shop beats a Saturday appointment at a cheap one.

Before you sit down

• Bring two photos — one of the cut you want, one of what you are trying to avoid. Words like “a bit shorter” mean nothing across a language or a decade.
• Ask for the total including any length surcharge before the cape goes on. Reputable shops quote it without being asked.
• If you are colour-correcting box dye, say so when you book. It changes the time slot from 90 minutes to four hours and pretending otherwise wastes everyone’s day.
• Fringe trims between visits are free or a few dollars at most salons — ask.

Tax and tipping, so the bill holds no surprises

Personal grooming services in British Columbia carry 5% GST and no PST — a $45 haircut rings up at $47.25 before you decide on a tip. Retail products you take home (shampoo, polish, aftercare) are a different line: those carry GST and 7% PST. Treatment by a registered massage therapist is the exception in the other direction — it is a health service and carries no GST at all.

Tipping runs 15–20% on the pre-tax total, and it is genuinely expected here. Round up rather than down for a stylist who fixed someone else’s colour, and tip the assistant who washed your hair separately if there was one — $5 in hand is normal. Card terminals will suggest 18/20/25%; the middle button is the local default, not the minimum. Cash is still welcome and, in small independent shops, still preferred.

How booking works here

Most Metro Vancouver salons run on a booking app — Fresha, Vagaro, Booksy or Square — rather than a phone line that someone answers mid-blow-dry. Book online if the option exists; you will see the actual stylist, the actual service length and, more often than not, the actual price. Colour work needs one to two weeks’ notice, and appointments with a specific senior stylist can run three weeks out. A basic cut is usually available within a few days.

Walk-ins still exist, mostly at barbershops on Commercial Drive, in Gastown and along Kingsway, and they are busiest between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays and all day Saturday. Late morning on a weekday is the quietest hour in almost every shop in the city.

Cancellation policies are real and enforced: 24 hours is the common line, and a no-show for a long colour or lash appointment is often charged at 50% or the full price. If you booked with a card on file, assume it will be used.
