Barbershops in Metro Vancouver

A barber in Metro Vancouver is cheap by big-city standards and getting less so. The floor sits around $25 in the shops along Kingsway, East Hastings and Whalley that never stopped charging what they charged in 2019; the middle of the market is $40–$50 in Mount Pleasant, on Commercial Drive and on Lonsdale; and $65–$85 buys you a Gastown or downtown chair with a whisky and a booking app that knows your name. All three cut hair well. What you are paying for above $50 is time — a 45-minute appointment instead of a 25-minute one — and the certainty of a specific barber rather than whoever is free.

The figures below are read from the price lists that Metro Vancouver barbershops publish on their own websites. Each is that shop’s lowest published price for the service, which is the number worth comparing; the quartile range shows where most shops actually sit, so a single $10 student special or a $60 master’s chair does not distort it.

ServiceTypical starting priceMedianPrice lists
Beard trim$15–$33$2017
Men's haircut$28–$50$4017
Skin / bald fade$28–$34$319
Buzz / clipper cut$25–$30$258
Hot-towel razor shave$20–$60$336
Kids' cut$25–$35$265
What moves the number. A skin fade is usually $5–$10 above a scissor cut because it takes longer, not because it is fancier. Adding a beard to a cut is cheaper as a combo than as two services — ask before you sit down. Shops distinguish between a “barber” and a “master barber” chair, and the gap is typically $10–$15. A few independents still add a small card surcharge or quietly discount for cash; the sign is usually taped to the mirror.

Where to look, by neighbourhood

Commercial Drive and East Van are the value core — long-running Italian and Latin American shops, walk-in trade, $30–$40 cuts, and Saturday queues that move. Mount Pleasant and Main Street hold the design-led shops: appointment-first, strong fade work, $45–$60. Gastown is the premium end, with shops that double as retail counters for pomade and razors. Downtown and Coal Harbour price for office workers and hotel guests and are the easiest to reach on foot, at $55–$85. Kingsway through to Metrotown is where the region’s Turkish, Persian and Vietnamese barbers cluster, often the best value in the region for a full cut-and-beard. Richmond is quieter for barbering and stronger for salon work — you will find fewer dedicated barbershops there. Lonsdale in North Vancouver is compact and walkable with a heavy Persian barbering presence. Surrey’s Newton and Whalley and New Westminster’s Columbia Street hold the cheapest reliable cuts in Metro Vancouver, frequently under $30.

Turkish, Persian and Latin barbering

The traditional shave — hot towel, straight razor, sometimes ear singeing with a flame — is easiest to find at Turkish and Persian shops along Kingsway, Lonsdale and Nanaimo Street. It is not a standard menu item everywhere: plenty of shops advertise a shave and then explain that only one of their barbers does it, on certain days. Phone first if that is the reason you are going, and expect $30–$45 and about half an hour. Latin American shops on Commercial Drive and in Whalley are the strongest for tight fades and line-ups, usually walk-in and usually the fastest in the city.

Walk in or book?

Roughly half the shops in this list take walk-ins and half do not, and the split runs along neighbourhood lines: the older shops on the Drive, Hastings and Kingsway keep a chair open, while Gastown, Main Street and downtown are appointment-first through Booksy, Squire or Fresha. Those apps show the live queue at walk-in shops, which is the fastest way to avoid a wasted trip.

The busy hours are the same everywhere in the region: Saturday between 10am and 2pm, and weekdays from 4:30pm once offices empty. Tuesday to Thursday late morning is the quietest window in almost every shop. Many barbershops close Sunday or Monday — check the hours in the list below rather than assuming, because that is the single most common reason people arrive at a locked door here.

Who inspects a barbershop in British Columbia

This surprises visitors: British Columbia does not licence barbers or hairstylists. There is no provincial certificate you have to hold to cut hair for money — the Red Seal hairstylist trade exists and is worth something professionally, but it is voluntary. What is mandatory is the shop’s personal service establishment permit from the regional health authority, which inspects for sterilisation, single-use blades and safe handling of anything that can break skin.

Inspection reports are public, and they are the one genuinely useful check before you sit down: Vancouver, Richmond and the North Shore are covered by Vancouver Coastal Health, and Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, New Westminster, Langley and Delta by Fraser Health. Search the shop’s name and you will see the last visit and any infractions.

Straight-razor shaves and skin. A razor that touches skin must be a fresh single-use blade taken out of its wrapper in front of you — a re-used straight razor is a health-code violation, not a tradition. Clippers and guards should come out of a barbicide jar or an autoclave pouch between clients. Any shop will show you this if you ask; the ones that hesitate answer the question by hesitating.

Tax and tipping, so the bill holds no surprises

Personal grooming services in British Columbia carry 5% GST and no PST — a $45 haircut rings up at $47.25 before you decide on a tip. Retail products you take home (shampoo, polish, aftercare) are a different line: those carry GST and 7% PST. Treatment by a registered massage therapist is the exception in the other direction — it is a health service and carries no GST at all.

Tipping runs 15–20% on the pre-tax total, and it is genuinely expected here. Round up rather than down for a stylist who fixed someone else’s colour, and tip the assistant who washed your hair separately if there was one — $5 in hand is normal. Card terminals will suggest 18/20/25%; the middle button is the local default, not the minimum. Cash is still welcome and, in small independent shops, still preferred.

Frequently asked

How much is a men's haircut in Vancouver?

Published starting prices in Metro Vancouver cluster around $40, with most shops between $30 and $50 and the cheapest reliable cuts under $30 along Kingsway, in Whalley and in New Westminster. Add 5% GST and a tip of 15 to 20%.

Do Vancouver barbershops take walk-ins?

About half do. Older shops on Commercial Drive, East Hastings and Kingsway keep a chair open; Gastown, Main Street and downtown shops are appointment-first through Booksy, Squire or Fresha. Those apps also show the live walk-in queue.

How much do you tip a barber here?

15 to 20% of the pre-tax price is the local norm — $6 to $8 on a $40 cut. Cash is still preferred in small independent shops, and the card terminal's middle suggestion is the default, not the minimum.

Where can I get a hot-towel straight-razor shave in Vancouver?

Turkish and Persian shops along Kingsway, Lonsdale Avenue and Nanaimo Street are the reliable places for it. It is often done by one barber on set days, so call first. Budget $30 to $45 and about half an hour.

Are barbers licensed in British Columbia?

The trade itself is not licensed — hairstylist certification in BC is voluntary. The shop must hold a personal service establishment permit from its health authority, and those inspection reports are public through Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health.

What is the busiest time at a Vancouver barbershop?

Saturday from 10am to 2pm, and weekdays after 4:30pm. Late morning from Tuesday to Thursday is the quietest hour almost everywhere, and many shops close Sunday or Monday entirely.
