Vancouver with Kids: Best Attractions, Beaches & Rainy-Day Ideas
Published 2026-07-13 ยท FanVancouver Travel Desk
Vancouver might be the easiest big city in North America to visit with children: kids 12 and under ride all transit free, the aquarium and science museum are world-class, and half the best days out (beaches, canyons, farms) cost nothing. The shortlist, tested on real kids:
The big indoor hitters (rainy-day proof)
- Science World โ 1455 Quebec St (the silver dome). Two floors of hands-on everything; adults ~C$35, kids less. Arrive at opening (10:00) on weekends.
- Vancouver Aquarium โ in Stanley Park: sea otters, penguins, the 4D theatre. ~C$45โ50 adult, cheaper online.
- FlyOver Canada โ Canada Place: a flying-theatre ride over the whole country. Minimum height 102 cm; ~C$36, short and thrilling.
- Bloedel Conservatory โ a tropical dome full of free-flying parrots in Queen Elizabeth Park; tiny price (~C$9), huge hit with under-8s.
Animals and outdoors
- Grouse Mountain โ the Skyride up to resident grizzly bears Grinder and Coola, lumberjack shows in summer, snow activities in winter.
- Maplewood Farm โ North Van's petting farm: goat paddock you can enter, pony rides, ~C$9.
- Capilano Suspension Bridge โ the Treetops walkways are made for kids (pricey, ~C$66 adult; kids under 6 free). The free alternative: Lynn Canyon's own suspension bridge + the fish hatchery below Capilano dam (also free) โ details in the attractions guide.
- Beaches: Kitsilano (heated seaside pool), Jericho (calm + big grass), Second Beach in Stanley Park (outdoor pool + playground). Spanish Banks at low tide = a kilometre of warm shallows.
- Granville Island โ the Kids Market (two floors of toy shops + indoor play), the splash park behind it (free, summer), and mini-ferry rides โ see getting around.
Cheap and free classics
- Burnaby Village Museum โ free entry to a 1920s streetscape village; rides on a working 1912 carousel cost ~C$3. One of the best free family attractions anywhere.
- Playland (summer) โ the wooden coaster amusement park; height limits vary by ride โ details here.
- Steveston day โ fishing boats, the cannery museum, fish & chips on the wharf and a great playground at nearby Terra Nova Park (markets guide).
- La Casa Gelato โ 238 flavours (durian to bubblegum); tasting spoons are free and the staff are patient.
Practical family notes
- Kids 12 and under: free on SkyTrain, buses and SeaBus (the boat ride itself is entertainment).
- Strollers: buses kneel and have fold-up seats; all SkyTrain stations have elevators; the seawall is stroller heaven.
- Every neighbourhood has a free outdoor playground + many have water parks (summer); washrooms in every park.
- Rainy day backup order: Science World โ Aquarium โ Bloedel dome โ central library kids floor (free).
- Family day trip: the Britannia Mine train + Sea to Sky Gondola combo is the single best kid-pleaser outside the city.
