Trips beyond the city from a Vancouver base: British Columbia, the Rockies, Vancouver Island and the Pacific Northwest — routes, costs and timing.

Where to go when you leave the city: BC road trips, the Rockies, Vancouver Island and the Pacific Northwest — distances, costs and the season each one actually works in.

Where these trips actually work, and when

Everything in this section starts in Vancouver, so the honest measure of a trip is not the distance but the season it works in and the hours it takes to get there. The four directions out of the city behave completely differently.

If the trip starts with a boarding pass, the shortest version of that measure is our list of every non-stop route out of YVR: 127 destinations, sorted by great-circle distance, with the seasonal ones marked so you do not plan a February holiday around a July-only flight.

DirectionDistanceTimeBest window
Sea-to-Sky — Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton60-160 km1-2 hYear round; snow tyres or chains required Oct-Mar
Vancouver Island — Victoria, Tofino, Comoxferry + 30-320 km3-7 hMay-Sep for the coast, Nov-Feb for storm watching
Interior — Okanagan, Kamloops, Kootenays320-620 km4-8 hJun-Oct; passes are winter driving, not scenery
Rockies — Banff, Jasper, Golden850-950 km10-12 hJun-Sep, or fly to Calgary and drive back
South — Seattle, Portland, the San Juans230-500 km2.5-6 hYear round; the border queue is the variable

Two rules save most of the disappointment. Ferries to Vancouver Island sell out for cars on summer weekends and long weekends — reserve, or travel as a foot passenger and rent on the other side. And the Coquihalla and the passes east are a genuine winter drive between November and March: check the highway conditions before committing, not after loading the car.

Planning a shorter escape? Explore BC covers the day trips within two hours of the city, and USA trips from Vancouver handles the cross-border side with the border and Amtrak details.
