Where to Camp Instead of the Okanagan in Fire Season

Where the same trip still works

The Okanagan is not irreplaceable. What people actually book it for — a warm lake, a site you can drive to, a swim before dinner — exists in four other parts of the province, all of which carry far less fire-season closure risk.

Sea-to-Sky, 1 to 2.5 hours from Vancouver

• Alice Lake — four warm lakes, flat walking, the closest thing to an Okanagan swim day within 90 minutes of the city.
• Porteau Cove — saltwater and Howe Sound views, walk-in and vehicle sites, cold swimming but the best sunsets on this list.
• Nairn Falls — Pemberton-side base with Whistler twenty minutes away and One Mile Lake for the swim.

Fraser Valley, under 2 hours

• Cultus Lake — the genuine Okanagan substitute: a warm lake, boat rentals and a waterslide park, an hour and a half from Vancouver.
• Sasquatch — three lakes above Harrison, quieter than Cultus and easier to book late.
• Golden Ears — huge, close, and Alouette Lake is warm enough to swim by July.

Vancouver Island, ferry plus a drive

• Rathtrevor Beach — a kilometre of tidal sand that warms in the sun; the best family beach campground in the province.
• Miracle Beach and French Beach for quieter versions.
• Pacific Rim — Green Point if you would rather trade the swim for surf and old-growth.

Kootenays and north, for the longer trip

• Kokanee Creek on Kootenay Lake — warm water, sandy beach, and genuinely the closest match to Okanagan swimming.
• Wells Gray and Mount Robson for waterfalls and mountains instead of vineyards.

Check these four things before you rebook

1. Is the park itself open? BC Parks posts closures on the individual park page. A regional fire does not close every park in the region.
2. Is there a campfire ban? Prohibitions are declared by fire centre and category — see current BC fire ban status. A Category 1 ban means no campfire at all, which changes what you pack.
3. Can you get there? DriveBC for the corridor, not just the destination.
4. Is there a site? BC Parks reservations open four months ahead to the day, so August fills in April. Cancellations appear constantly during fire season — check in the evening, when people give up on the Interior.

What you actually give up

Honestly: the wine, the size of the lakes, and the heat. Nothing in the Fraser Valley or Sea-to-Sky reaches 35°C for a week straight the way Kelowna does, and the tasting-room afternoon has no substitute. What you get back is a shorter drive, cooler nights, a swim in water that is warm enough by mid-July, and a far lower chance of packing up at midnight under an evacuation order.
