Driving in Vancouver 2026: Cameras, ICBC, Border, Gas
If you actually drive here, start with the camera on the road you will be on, then the knowledge-test gotchas if you still hold an L or N, then the border if you are going to Washington. Gas, Park & Ride and parking rates sit underneath. We do not sell ICBC exam tickets — that bank is theirs.
The differences that fail visitors from Ontario, the US and Eastern Europe. Full drill (with translations) on the knowledge-test page.
Flashing greenFlashing green is not an advanced left
In much of Eastern Europe and Ontario a flashing green means left-turn priority. In B.C. it is a pedestrian-controlled light: cars may go if the way is clear, but a pedestrian button can hold you. Do not treat it as a dedicated left arrow.
Distracted driving$368 + 4 points for the phone
Handheld device while driving — including on your lap at a red light — is $368 and four penalty points on every ticket. DPP premium is extra if you sit at four or more points at assessment.
Right on redRight on red after a full stop
Legal unless a sign forbids it. Stop, yield to pedestrians and cross traffic, then turn. Left on red is only from a one-way street onto a one-way street, still after a stop.
School zone vs playgroundSchool 8–5 school days; playground dawn to dusk every day
Default school zone is 30 km/h 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on school days. Playground zones are 30 km/h dawn to dusk every day including weekends. Read the tab — some corridors post different hours.
U-turnNo U-turn at a signalized intersection
In B.C. you must not U-turn at an intersection with traffic lights unless a sign says you may. Do that in the next block or a legal opening.
Yield to busYield to a bus leaving the curb
At 60 km/h and below, yield to a bus that has signalled to re-enter. Visitors from provinces without this rule fail it constantly.
Winter tiresM+S / 3-peak from 1 Oct
Most signed highways require winter tires or chains 1 October–30 April (some routes 31 March). Passenger fine for ignoring the sign is $121 (MVA s.125). All-seasons without M+S or the mountain snowflake do not count.
1 metreOne metre when passing a cyclist
The Motor Vehicle Act requires at least one metre. If you cannot leave a metre, wait.
90 days vs 6 monthsResidents 90 days; tourists six months
Moved here: exchange a valid licence within 90 days. Tourists visiting up to six months can keep driving on a valid foreign licence. Mixing these two is a classic fail.
Class 7L → 7N → 5 → 4Licence ladder
Learner 7L (supervisor, L sign, 0.00 BAC) → novice 7 / N (unsupervised, N sign, night passenger limits) → Class 5 full car → Class 4 for taxi/Uber-type commercial passenger. Knowledge test for 5/7/7L is one 50-question passenger exam.
The passenger knowledge test (Class 5 / 7 / 7L) is one exam. Motorcycle and commercial classes are not. Confirm current GLP hours and passenger limits on ICBC — we do not freeze 2019 screenshots here.
7L
Class 7L — Learner (L)
First passenger licence in B.C. (Graduated Licensing Program).
Display the L sign. A qualified supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat. Zero alcohol. Hours and passenger limits are on ICBC’s GLP page — they change, so read that page, not a screenshot from 2019.
7
Class 7 — Novice (N)
After you pass the Class 7 road test.
You may drive unsupervised. Display the N sign. Zero alcohol. Night passenger limits apply for part of the novice stage. The passenger knowledge test is the same as Class 5 / 7L.
5
Class 5 — full passenger
After the novice stage, or a Class 5 road test if you already hold a full out-of-province licence.
The standard B.C. car licence. Knowledge test for Class 5 / 7 / 7L is one passenger test: 50 questions, 40 to pass.
6
Class 6 — motorcycle
Motorcycle knowledge, skills and road tests.
A different knowledge test from the car test. Learn to Ride Smart is the book, not Learn to Drive Smart.
4
Class 4 — taxi / limo / ambulance / small bus
Commercial passenger work under Class 4 vehicle limits.
Separate knowledge test. Vehicle types and weights are on ICBC — do not guess from a Class 5 booklet.
1-3
Class 1, 2, 3 — heavy truck / bus
Tractor-trailers (1), buses (2), heavy trucks (3).
Air-brake endorsement is often required. Not the quiz on this page. Start at ICBC commercial licensing.
Scan or insert the card, or link it in the Shell app. 3¢/L pre-tax, 4 fills a day, 1,000 L a calendar month, through 28 February 2027. 10% off washes on the same page. We are not BCAA.
4% is not “every Chevron, Shell, Petro-Canada and T&T.” Grocery is MCC 5411; gas stations are 2%, each with a $25,000 annual cap. Shell Go+ cents-off is extra and capped by litres/month.
BCAA (Shell), RBC (Petro-Canada) and PC Optimum (Esso/Mobil) still run cents-off programmes. The amount in the app is the amount — do not budget a fixed 3¢ from a blog. ICBC lessons are whatever the school quotes this week — we do not sell a $40 Class 5 coupon we do not have.
FAQ
Is BCAA really 3 cents a litre at Shell?
BCAA’s terms page still publishes 3¢/L at participating Shell through 28 February 2027, capped at 1,000 litres a month and four transactions a day. 10% off washes. Conditions on their site. The monthly math is on the cents-off page.
Does Scotia Momentum pay 4% on all gas in Vancouver?
No. The February 2026 terms pay 4% on grocery MCC 5411 and recurring bills (capped), and 2% on gas stations / EV charging. Shell Go+ cents-off is a separate stack. Read Scotiabank, not a 4% banner.
Where is the live Costco ¢/L map?
GasBuddy returns 403 from this server. Type today’s totem into the fuel calculator. We will not paint a fake 177.9¢ pin.
Where are the highway cameras?
DriveBC’s stills on the highway cameras page. Star your commute so Lions Gate / Second Narrows open first next visit. Winter-tire banner lights 1 Oct–30 Apr.
Do you sell ICBC exam questions or a $100 instructor lead?
No. The quiz is original paraphrased gotchas. Official bank is practicetest.icbc.com. Instructors: Telegram or /contact/ — no fake booking form.
Prices on this page are estimates for planning and can change — check the operator, venue or booking site before you pay.
The monthly cents-off math — BCAA 3¢/L at Shell with the 1,000 L cap, Scotia 4% grocery MCC and 2% gas — is on the honest cashback page.
